History
The monastic tradition of Mount Athos traces back to the 4th century, when the first hermits sought solitude among its forests and cliffs. In AD 963, Saint Athanasius the Athonite founded the Great Lavra, the oldest and most prominent of the twenty ruling monasteries, under the patronage of the Byzantine Emperor Nikephoros Phokas.
Through the Byzantine era, Ottoman rule, and into the modern day, the Holy Mountain preserved an unbroken continuity of prayer, iconography, and Orthodox theology. Imperial chrysobulls, Byzantine frescoes, and one of the world's richest collections of medieval manuscripts survive within its walls — a living archive of the Christian East.
Today, Mount Athos is a self-governed part of the Greek state and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its twenty monasteries, along with sketes and hermitages, continue to welcome pilgrims who seek to step — even briefly — into a rhythm of life unchanged for more than a thousand years.
